This method avoids much of the damage done to the form, texture, and colour done to plants by other methods of preservation. What's more, silica gel is reusable and doesn't wear out. If it is holding too much moisture it can be dried in an oven at 120 °C (248 °F) for 2-3 hours to recharge it.
