At Gwartzman's, we believe that our artist community is only strengthened by diversity. To celebrate Pride Month, we are shining a spotlight on 2SLGBTQ+ artists in Canada whose work and stories inspire us all. Through their unique perspectives and creative expressions, these artists contribute to a richer and more inclusive arts community. We are proud to introduce you to three incredible artists: Christopher Rouleau, Syrus Marcus Ware, and Pete Ellison.
Christopher Rouleau is an independent graphic designer, sign painter, and lettering artist based in Toronto. Along with his full-time freelance work, he is also a public speaker, lettering instructor, and published author. Christopher's work has been featured in Spacing Magazine, Uppercase Magazine, and Flare Magazine. He attended the Alberta College of Art & Design and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary. In 2018, he received a Communication Arts Award of Excellence in Typography. As an instructor for the online tutorial website Domestika, Christopher continues to share his expertise and passion for design. When he's not working, you'll likely find him sipping double espressos or riding his bike around Toronto.
Syrus Marcus Ware is a Vanier Scholar, visual artist, activist, curator, and educator. He serves as an Assistant Professor at the School of the Arts, McMaster University. Using drawing, installation, and performance, Syrus explores social justice frameworks and Black activist culture. His work has been widely exhibited, including solo shows at Tangled Art + Disability, Grunt Gallery, and Wil Aballe Art Projects. Syrus' art has also been featured in the Toronto Biennial of Art, the Ryerson Image Centre, and the Bentway’s Safety in Public Spaces Initiative. He is a co-founder of Black Lives Matter-Canada and the Wildseed Centre for Art & Activism. Syrus has co-curated significant projects such as The Cycle, a two-year disability arts performance initiative, and has received numerous awards, including the TD Diversity Award. His publications include "Until We Are Free: Reflections on Black Lives Matter in Canada" and "Marvellous Grounds: Queen of Colour Formations."
Pete Ellison is an American-Canadian visual artist, illustrator, printmaker, and designer. His vibrant work pays homage to the bright cartoons, arcade games, and breakfast cereals of the 80s and 90s, creating a playful tribute to the aesthetics of consumer culture. Pete’s art is characterized by its nostalgic yet contemporary appeal, capturing the joy and color of childhood memories. With a style that merges past and present, Pete continues to influence and inspire with his creative contributions to the arts.
We are honored to share the stories of these remarkable artists during Pride Month. Celebrating diversity and ensuring the rights of sexual and gender minorities is an ongoing effort, and by amplifying the voices of 2SLGBTQ+ artists, we aim to contribute to this important cause.
Happy Pride Toronto and our Artist's Community!
